The Danish Oscar Committee yesterday released its shortlist of the three films in contention to become the country’s official entry in the hunt for the 2014 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
The committee chose three movies from a field of 18 feature films and four documentaries, and the entry will be announced on September 18.
The three selections are:
Inspired by Morten Kirkskov’s novel, Niels Arden Oplev's 'Kapgang' ('Speed Walking') tells the story of an adolescent getting through the hardest stage of his life. His mother's sudden death and the events that follow shake the entire small community. Oplev is best known for directing the Swedish film 'Män som hatar kvinnor' ('The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo').
Pernille Fischer Christensen's 'En du elsker' ('Someone You Love') deals with a musician who, after years abroad, comes back in Denmark to record a new album and is forced to take care of his 11-year-old grandson. Christensen is best known for directing 'En Soap' ('A Soap') and 'En Familie'.
Tragically autobiographic, Nils Malmros's 'Sorg og glæde' ('Sorrow and Joy') deals with the grief experienced by a couple after their child is killed by his own mother in a psychotic fit. Malmros, who made his first film in 1968, is considered one of Denmark's most important (and depressing) directors.
