Flotilla of kite-surfers travel Coast 2 Coast in Germany-Denmark race

Red Bull sponsored the event, now in its third year

Yesterday kite-surfers from all over the world gathered on the German island of Fehmarn for what was billed as the toughest kite-surfing race ever: the Red Bull Coast 2 Coast.

The 500 competitors from 19 countries crossed the Fehmarn Belt, passed within 100 metres of Rødbyhavn on the south coast of Lolland, and then returned the 40 km back to Fehmarn.

The competitors had to deal with big waves and high winds on the marathon journey, requiring technique, concentration and endurance.

It is the third year that the event has taken place. There were 1,500 applications to compete from all over the world, and 31 Danes were among those to make it to the start-line.

The winning time was 1:06:20, set by kite-surfer German Florian Gruber.
