New mosque opening in Copenhagen today

It is the largest mosque in Denmark offering a space for up to 1,500 worshippers

A new Shia mosque is officially opening today on Vibevej in Copenhagen Nordvest at 4 pm.

With space for up to 1,500 worshippers, its 2,100 sqm makes Imam Ali Moske the largest in Denmark.

The building has a turquoise-blue dome and two 32-metre high minarets.

In addition to providing space for worship, the mosque will also serve as a cultural centre for people with different nationalities.

So, while the opening ceremony today will be held in Danish and Arabic, the mosque will offer programs also in Persian and English in the future.

The mosque has been controversial from the start. Copenhagen Municipality received 1,156 objections against it.

Sunni mosques in the capital
Copenhagen already has a Sunni mosque on Rovsingsgade that was funded by Qatar and highly criticised by Dansk Folkeparti.

Another Sunni mosque, with an ultramodern architectonic design, is currently being built in Islands Brygge in Amager.
