The Royal Run returns to Copenhagen and Frederiksberg on Monday, June 9th, with 45,000 participants expected in the capital region. The event, first held in 2018 to mark King Frederik’s 50th birthday, offers runners a choice of one mile, 5 km, or 10 km distances.

Traffic along the route—covering the Inner City, Vesterbro, and Frederiksberg—will be closed from 7:00 to 23:00. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross the course, and metro services will operate normally.

Royal Run 2025 will also take place in other cities, and is expected to have nearly 97,500 participants across five host cities: Copenhagen/Frederiksberg, Ribe, Viborg, Horsens, and Korsør. For more traffic information, see the official site.

Whit Monday, also known as Pentecost Monday, follows Pentecost Sunday and is traditionally a day off for many Danes. Whether you’re planning a quiet day at home or a meal out, it’s wise to prepare in advance—especially if your fridge needs restocking.

  • Denmark accelerates defence reforms: extended conscription and new mobilisation force planned

The Danish government has announced that key reforms to strengthen national defence will be implemented sooner than expected.

Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed today on Constitution Day (Grundlovsdag) that the newly extended 11-month military service will begin in February 2026, six months earlier than originally scheduled.

The measure is part of a broader effort to increase Denmark’s military readiness amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.

In a video posted on Facebook, Poulsen stated that a new mobilisation force is also being planned. It will consist of thousands of former conscripts who can be called back to service in the event of a war or major crisis.

According to the minister, the rapid implementation of these reforms is a direct response to the changing security landscape in Europe. “When there is urgency around air defence, new conscription, and the establishment of a new mobilisation force, it is because we once again have war in Europe — and because the world we know is changing rapidly,” he said.

The government will also make a decision next week on acquiring Denmark’s first ground-based air defence systems in two decades. The systems are expected to be operational in 2026.

  • Nørrebro in Copenhagen will be largely closed to car traffic and public transportation today

One of the most anticipated events in Copenhagen’s music calendar will take place this afternoon in Nørrebro. The street party, part of the Distortion festival, will run from 16:00 to 22:00. Dozens of events will take place along the route from Dronning Louises Bro—which will be closed—to Assistens Kirkegård. The event is free and open to the public.

Car traffic will be blocked throughout the area, and buses will not operate in the affected zones. The metro will run as usual. While it is technically allowed to cycle through the neighborhood, it is not recommended, as large crowds are expected and navigating the area may be difficult.

The streets will reopen after 22:00, when cleanup operations begin.

If you are interested in Distortion and today’s street party, we have published an article with more details and practical tips for attendees.

  • Weather forecast: great Saturday, but then the summer is postponed again

A great Saturday to break this never-ending wait for Danish summer will bring sun and light, before rain and clouds once again become the leitmotif of Danish May and June.

Tomorrow (Saturday) in Copenhagen will be sunny from midday on, with temperatures reaching 19–20 degrees. Sunday will start fine, but over the course of the afternoon, it will get worse, and it will probably rain.

The same thing is expected in Aarhus: a great Saturday with 20–21 degrees, and then a bad Sunday with clouds and rain.

Odense will see a warm but partly sunny and partly cloudy day tomorrow, while Sunday is expected to be rainy.

Aalborg will have a sunny but not very warm Saturday, and strong rain on Sunday.

As always, please remember that weather in Denmark changes suddenly — and so do weather forecasts. For the most updated information, you can check https://www.dmi.dk/.

  • Today is Ascension Day in Denmark, a public holiday from the Christian tradition. Most of the supermarket are closed

Today is Ascension Day, a national holiday in Denmark.

It takes place 40 days after Easter and represents the day Christians believe Jesus went up to Heaven after coming back to life.

Most of the shops and supermarkets will be closed today. Most of bar are restaurants are supposed to be open.

Many people are also taking tomorrow off to enjoy a long weekend. So today if you’re working Friday, you’ll probably be one of the few around.

Churches in Denmark hold special services for the day, and in some places, there are evening walks with torches to represent Jesus going to Heaven. In the past, farmers also paid close attention to the weather today—sun meant a good summer ahead, while rain was thought to bring a bad harvest.

    What’s the next day off?

June 5 is Constitution Day (Grundlovsdag), which is important, but it’s not a public holiday. The next actual day off is Pentecost Monday (Whit Monday) on June 9, giving people another chance to rest or travel.

And then, July is just around the corner—the start of the holiday season.
