Who said the Swiss make the best chocolate in the world? Once you’ve tried a few of these places you’ll be wondering why Denmark isn’t suggested more often. And of course I’m going to say chocolate makes the perfect gift, but may I suggest making it a gift for yourself?

Summerbird ‘Pure’ Once called the ‘kransekagehuset’, this little boutique is no longer limited to cakes. Summerbird is infamous for creating bit size pieces of confectionery that give a huge punch of flavour in the mouth. The most popular treat is the liquorice almonds – an almond covered in chocolate and rolled in liquorice powder. They’ve also spiced up this traditional recipe, now serving lemon and passion fruit ones. Although on the pricy side, Summerbird’s philosophy is quality not quantity.

A XOCO Renowned for his marzipan bread, chocolatier Anton Berg created A XOCO three years ago to give customers a more authentic chocolate experience. Everything here is homemade and presented stunningly – a great place for gifts! The flødeboller here are to die for – you must try the white chocolate ones with a liquorice cream. And don’t ignore the chocolate almonds covered in shimmering colours that make them look like precious stones. Stunning!

Kjaerstrup ‘chocolate by hand’ Walking in here feels like waling into Grandma’s kitchen: it’s warm, cosy and smells devine. In the summer this place provides the best chocolate topping for ice creams. But with winter upon us, warm up with some of their hot chocolate sticks. Just place the sticks into a warm cup of milk and wola! And when breakfast is getting boring, wake up with Kjaerstrup’s musli infused with chocolate pieces. A little place with a surprisingly large range of chocolate treats!

Peter Beier Chokolade Chocolatier Peter Beier studied the art of chocolate in Spain, Belgium, France and England. His company even has its own cocoa plantation so these guys know good chocolate. I always stop by here for that one-off treat, be it the ‘classic white’ (extremely creamy and goes down well with coffee) Japanese white (has a bit of a kick) or Beier’s delicious body paint. Go on, you know you want to.
