Speculation high that PM will call election today

Helle Thorning-Schmidt’s announcement could come this morning

After months of speculation, some are predicting that PM Helle Thorning-Schmidt will use a press conference scheduled for this morning to call a general election. Although the exact date has not been finalised, voting would take place on either June 16 or 17.

Thorning-Schmidt’s government has made a number of proposals this spring, including refugee and welfare packages. According to national broadcaster DR, she is now ready to see if she has the mandate to work on those and other proposals over the next four years.

PM trailing
Despite recent gains in the polls, Thorning-Schmidt’s red bloc still trails the blue bloc led by Venstre’s Lars Løkke Rasmussen. The latest Epinion poll done for DR Nyheder showed that the assembled blue bloc stands to receive 52.2 percent of the vote, while the red bloc trails with 47.7 percent.

Rhetoric surrounding immigration, the size of the public sector, health and unemployment benefits are expected to dominate the upcoming election campaign.
