On this day 35 years ago in 1980, a Danish festival institution was born as the Skanderborg Festival. Also known as Smukfest or Denmark Smukkeste Festival, it was held for the first time as a one-day event involving seven bands and 600 attendees. Today, the festival is second in size only to Roskilde Festival and attracts more than 45,000 festival-goers.
