Nordhavn to offer roof-top sport and fitness

It includes a football court, trampoline, frames for crossfit training and a 60-metre running track

In future, fitness, crossfit and football nuts can feed their hobbies seven storeys up on a roof-top sports and exercise area in the fast-developing Nordhavn district of Copenhagen.

The sports area will be located on top of a multistorey carpark overlooking the city in the middle of the new Aarhusgade quarter in Østerbro and will, among other things, include a 1-on-1 Panna football court, a trampoline, frames for crossfit training, a 60-metre running track and a climbing tower for children.

“The Aarhusgade quarter will be a compact city that is limited by the harbour basins, so it is a good and correct idea to merge the quarter’s functions and utilise the space as well as possible,” Jens Kramer, the head of city developer By & Havn, said in a press release.

Open 24/7
Carl Christian Ebbesen, the city’s deputy mayor for culture and leisure, applauded the plan but contended that more needed to be done.

“Around 30,000-40,000 people are going to live in Nordhavn, so many areas must be reserved for culture and sports facilities, and the sooner that happens, the happier I will be,” Ebbesen told Politiken newspaper.

The 2,625 sqm athletics area – designed by Jaja Architects – will be open 24 hours a day and is expected to be open to the public sometime in the autumn of 2015.
