Local politicians accepting unlawful donations

To give money anonymously is illegal, but to pretend to do it anonymously is even worse

The practice of anonymous donations in politics is largely outlawed in the Nordics. However, according to Berlingske, it is blatantly going on in Denmark at a local level.

A data request by the newspaper has shown that in the period from 2007 to 2013, some 7.2 million kroner in anonymous donations were made to local politicians.

This news perplexes Jørgen Albæk, a law professor at Aarhus University.

"It is somewhat surprising that this is going on to such a large extent at a local level," he told Berlingske.

It is alleged that some of the local politicians know the donors who are filed as anonymous, which is also highly illegal.
