Two missing fishermen found dead

Rescuers had been looking for the leisure fishermen since yesterday evening after they failed to return by late afternoon as agreed

After searching throughout the night and today, the Danish Navy (SOK) located two fishermen who have been missing since Monday evening.

Both men were found dead in Little Belt Strait, located between the island of Funen and Jutland.

“We have found the missing boat and two dead men,” Jesper Rasmussen, a naval press officer, told DR Nyheder.

Cell phones not working
According to DR, one of the men was found in the skiff they were fishing from and the other was found dead in the water. SOK confirmed that the two men were the ones who were reported missing.

Rasmussen said that SOK located the skiff and the men in the southern part of the strait, just south of the small island of Årø.

The two leisure fishermen left home on Monday morning from Helnæs on Funen, but failed to show up again at 16:00 as planned. When they could not be reached via cell phone, the relatives called them in as missing.

Tip leads to find
A major problem that dogged SOK throughout the search was that no-one knew in which direction the two fisherman had sailed.

Using three ships and a helicopter, SOK searched the Little Belt Strait area all night and the following morning without luck, but received a tip this morning that someone had seen a small white skiff.

Shortly thereafter, the skiff and the two bodies were recovered.
