Danish duo hanging over the precipice

To advance, both FCK and OB will need two victories and other results to go their way

FC CopenhagenÂ’s chances of qualifying for the knockout stage of the Europa League are hanging by a thread following a disastrous 2-1 defeat to Hannover 96 last night at Parken.

Three second half minutes proved to be their undoing, as the Bundesliga visitors came from behind to take all three points.

Realistically, the Lions will need to beat Ukranian outfit Vorskla Poltava on November 30, and hope Standard Liege fail to beat Hannover at home on the same night.

FCKÂ’s progress would then be in their hands as their final game is at home against the Belgians on December 15, while Hannover plays host to Poltava.

Standard last night beat Poltava 3-1 to put them four points ahead of FCK and level with Hannover at the top of the group – they, like Hannover, only need to win one more game to advance.

Likewise, OB face an uphill struggle to qualify. A creditable 3-2 defeat to FC Twente in the Netherlands last night saw their victors advance to the knockout stage.

With just three points from four games, OB will need to beat Wisla Krakow on December 1 and hope English side Fulham, currently four points ahead in second place, fail to beat Twente.

Should this happen, OB will need to beat Fulham in London on December 14 to progress.
