Pick of the flicks with CPH:PIX

Cinemateket in the heart of Copenhagen offers a rich programme of more than 60 films every month, many of which are in English or with English subtitles. In April, the cinema is showing Japanese cult classics, Alfred Hitchcock, Lynne Ramsay and, of course, the film festival CPH:PIX.

From April 12, CPH:PIX takes over the city with films, concerts and readings from all over the world. More than 150 films over 18 days should provide plenty of opportunity to catch all the movies you want to see. The festival management intends to make CPH:PIX an event for the regular enthusiasts with high quality films from around the world, while simultaneously orchestrating a festival that competes with the major European film festivals. This means a standard dose of red carpets, glitterati and VIP parties is inevitable. A focus on new talents and avant-garde as well as cross collaborations between art forms and institutions should make this balancing act possible.

One of these new talents is Belgian film director Michaël R Roskam. Roskam attended St Lucas Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he studied painting and contemporary art, and the Binger Film Institute in Amsterdam where he graduated in 2005 with a master’s degree in script writing and development. After several jobs as a journalist for Flemish newspaper De Morgen and a copywriter, he wrote a script for a short film entitled Haun in 2002.

Roskam made his feature film debut with Bullhead, which was released in 2011. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film – the film is made in Limburgish, a language (or dialect, according to some) spoken in the Dutch/Belgian border area. He was named by Variety as one of the ‘10 directors to watch’ and received the Magritte Award for Best Screenplay and the André Cavens Award.

Bullhead is playing the first three days of the film festival. Tickets are on sale for 80kr and can be bought online.
