Joggers running around the Lakes in Copenhagen will soon be able to cut corners with a clear conscience. By the end of this month, a floating bridge crossing Sortedam Lake will open to the public, according to Berlingske newspaper.
The floating shortcut will replace some of the regular gravel paths next to the lake’s shore, reducing the regular route encircling the three lakes. The eastern part of Sortedam Lake, including the stretch of Østerbrogade called ‘Lille Trianglen’, will temporarily house the huge amount of leftover soil from the digging of the new underground tunnels.
“In a city like Copenhagen, there are very few open spaces for this type of large-scale construction site. We have therefore chosen to include recreational areas around the city to avoid having to remove buildings,” Hanne Tærsbøl Schmidt, the development manager at Metroselskabet, told Berlingske.
To make room for the expansion of the Metro, part of the lake is being drained. Although there is not going to be a Metro station at Sortedam Lake, there will be two placed in the vicinity: one at Østerport Station and another at Trianglen. Sortedam Lake will be put back to its normal, picturesque conditions when the expansion of the Metro is finished in 2018.
