Greening the Little Mermaid

Bring in the St Patrick's Day weekend – and hopefully, warmer weather – with this week's events.

Greening the Little Mermaid
Come and see the Little Mermaid become a bona fide Irishwoman. This year, the statue will join the ranks of Dubai’s Burj al Arab, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and New York’s Empire State Building in becoming a green national landmark. Bring in the St Paddy’s weekend with this celebratory event. You’ll listen to live music, learn about the events happening on Sunday and generally cheer the Irish spirit!

Svalerne Flea Market
They claim they’re Copenhagen’s coolest flea market; why don’t you check it out for yourself? Every Saturday, this market opens down a small street, unseen by passers-by and ripe for discovery. You’ll find everything you can imagine: vases, antiques, vintage clothes, books and just about anything else. Rest easy knowing what you’ve purchased is going to be donated to help impoverished women and children in Bangladesh and India. But remember to bring cash! They won’t accept credit cards.

Nattergalevej 6, Cph NV; every Sat, 10:00-15:00; free adm; www.svalerne.dk

Tchaikovsky & Shostakovich
In the mood for something dramatic? The classical music of Russia might be exactly what you’re looking for. Join the National DR Symphony Orchestra for the dramatic symphonies of 19th century composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and the lesser-known 20th century composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Russia’s ‘grand dame’ of piano, Elisabeth Leonskaja, will solo. This is sure to be a powerful night of music.

Koncertsalen, Koncerthuset, Ørestads Boulevard 13, Cph S; Thu 19:30; tickets: 150-530kr, www.billetlugen.dk; www.dr.dk/koncerthuset

Easter Jumble
Celebrate Easter − and the coming warm weather − with the Swedish Church in Copenhagen when they again host their annual jumble. Peruse donated goods, handmade Easter crafts and volunteer-baked goods and cakes. You can even try elk sausage! On Saturday, the Victoria Choir will perform a concert right after the market at 16:30, so spend the day in the fresh spring air with a hot cup of coffee to keep you warm. Donations will help the church on future renovations and projects.

Gustafskyrkan, Folke Bernadottes Allé 4, Cph Ø; March 16 from 10:00-16:00, March 17 from 12:00-15:00; www.svenskakyrkan.se/kopenhamn

Free Gelato at Manolo Opening
Celebrate one of the best parts about the warming weather: freezing cold ice cream and gelato. Manolo is gearing up to open up its shop in Hellerup, right on the main thoroughfare. The staff are just as excited about spring as we are, and they’re offering free ice cream for four hours! Bring the whole family, get some ice cream and enjoy the weekend on the Øresund!

Ravnsborggade Market
Spend a leisurely Sunday strolling down Ravnsborggade, a small street just north of the lakes that will transform into a massive street market. Antiques dominate this market, but don’t worry − each time it opens, a greater selection and variety of goods become available. All unique, all vintage and all in one of Copenhagen’s hidden-away neighbourhoods. Come by and peruse the tables of goods laid out by locals, and take refuge in the small and cosy cafes that are sprinkled around the area.
