Where teetotallers are having a bubble

One is just spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing a cosy café in the centre of Copenhagen. Coffee being preferred over tea by most Danes, you can find every variety possible in every variation possible in this city. But after a number of visits, when you are all ‘caffeined out’ and the cafés all begin to look and taste the same, you know it’s time to try something new. This was my state a few months back when I stumbled upon Taste of Taiwan.  Located on the cosy street of Løngangstraede, this café is nothing like any other in town.

Far from the usual coffee specialities in and around Copenhagen, Taste of Taiwan focuses only on serving tea to its customers and just ‘Bubble Tea’. For those unfamiliar with the concept of bubble tea, or cocktail tea as it’s also called, it is a tea-based drink mixed with fruit or milk or both, while another popular option is flavoured jelly. While the coconut, coffee and passion fruit options are popular,  the hands-down winner is the tapioca pearls.

With bubble tea, there is also the option of having it hot or cold black or as latte. The flavours of the teas are beyond one’s imagination and range from simple Assam, jasmine and mint to more exotic ones like almond, hazelnut, taro and passion fruit. Having tried the teas both hot and cold, I can guarantee that there is something for every tea drinker. Whether you are looking for a warm flavoured drink during the cold months to have while you shop on Strøget, or you are looking for a healthier iced drink to enjoy outdoors in the summer, bubble tea caters to everyone. Even the clever packaging, which is an air-tight seal over the container, is adaptable to whether you choose to stay in or have it to go.

Visiting Taste of Taiwan is not just about getting a cup of tea, it’s about experiencing a very rich but humble culture. From the smiling faces of the staff to the simple interiors, and the unusual tea makers to the flavoured teas, it’s all about having an exotic drink from a faraway land.
