Majority to queen: Just retire already

A slim majority want to see Crown Prince Frederik become king now and a full 77 percent feel he is up to the task

A majority of Danes have once again expressed their desire for a new monarch.

In a poll conducted by YouGov for Søndagsavisen newspaper, 51 percent of respondents said that Queen Margrethe should abdicate the throne and make way for her son, Crown Prince Frederik. Some 30 percent said the queen should remain in power until her death, while the rest weren't sure.

While only a slim majority wanted to see Frederik take the throne now, a whopping 77 percent feel that he is ready for it. Just eleven percent didn't think he was adequately prepared to assume the crown.

The results were similar to that of a poll in February in which over 60 percent of respondents said that Margrethe should voluntarily abdicate the throne and make way for Frederik rather than remain Denmark's queen until her death.

At age 73, Queen Margrethe II has seen some of her contemporaries ride off into the sunset across Europe. The 79-year-old Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands stepped down in April, while Belgium's King Albert abdicated the throne last month at the age of 79.
