Despite Denmark’s strong welfare system, homelessness persists due to systemic gaps, limited support services, and stigma—leaving many vulnerable people without access to stable housing or adequate care. The Copenhagen Post talked to experts and organizations at the forefront of the fight against homelessness to paint a picture of a forgotten aspect of Danish society.
According to Danmarks Statistik, of the 83,216 who moved to Denmark in 2024, 54,614 people immigrated to either work or study. This means that low retention is a real problem.

Books and Company has been in Hellerup for 16 years. It was opened by Isabella, who returned to Denmark after a long time abroad, being an international herself. “This is where I learned that many internationals in Denmark were interested in a sort of sanctuary, a place where they didn’t feel like outsiders—as non-Danes can often feel in Copenhagen.”
A report by DCE, The National Center for Environment and Energy, reveals improved air quality in Denmark, with the country being on target for the EU’s 2030 air quality goals for ammonia, sulfur, and NMVOC.
