Select Shopping | The art of sandwich making

Sandwiches are one of life’s most underrated luxury foods, but can often be disappointing if not made well. So who are the city’s best sandwich artists?

The guys behind the counter at Smagsløget appreciate the art and importance of making a good quality sandwich. The charcuterie is cut to order, which is just one factor that shows the love that goes into these delicious rolls. In true Danish style, the bread is lightly toasted dark rye and the fillings can be experimental at times, but they work.  Look out specifically for their roast beef and chilli-pesto creation, or the most popular meatball filling that may just be the best you’ve ever tasted if you can get in before it’s sold out.

The name of the café is a good indication of the style of food. This quaint little café sells a small selection of sandwiches on fluffy homemade rolls. The selection is basic and contains simple fillings that may take you back to your grandmother’s kitchen. The best thing about these sandwiches though is the excellent ratio between bread and filling, which makes the crew working at MorMors quite the qualified sandwich artists. The guacamole and homemade hummus sandwich is definitely a noteworthy vegetarian bite to eat.

Ma Poule
Mosie on down to Torvehallerne and look for the long line leading to Ma Poule, a French-inspired poultry shop with a mouth-watering confit duck sandwich. The stall has only one sandwich on offer and, for 55 kroner, is reasonably priced for Torvehallerne standards. Charming beret-headed Frenchmen make the sandwiches, and they are not stingy on the duck, which is a pleasant change. To follow the French theme, the bread is a crispy baguette with a thin layer of Dijon and a scatter of roquette. The lines may be long, but they never seem to run out, so you may as well enjoy a cold Kronenbourg while you wait.

Grams Lækkerier
This little sandwich shop is hidden behind the Metro construction on Halmtorvet, but is well worth a visit for their large hand-prepared and rustic sandwiches. The two-man team run a highly efficient operation and offer six different sandwiches, a soup and a salad.
