Bicycle bridges to be finished by end of year

The bridges were originally due to open in February 2013

The City Council has revealed that it has found the contractors needed to finish the three new bicycle bridges that have been delayed and remained unfinished since contractor Pihl & Søn went bankrupt in August last year.

Denmark and US-owned Valmont SM hailing from Rødekro have been picked to finish Inderhavnsbroen Bridge, while Grenå-based contractor HSM Industri will finish the two canal bridges, Trangravsbroen and Proviantbroen.

“Since Pihl’s bankruptcy last autumn, we have worked with the aim of finding new partners for the two projects,” Jens Christian Zøfting-Larsen, a spokesperson for the City Council, told Ingeniøren newspaper.

“I am pleased that the final agreements are in place so we can look ahead and focus on finishing the bridges for the Copenhageners.”

Connecting the harbour
The bridges were originally due to open in February 2013, but the delay means that the Inderhavnsbroen Bridge is now expected to be completed at the end of this year, while the two canal bridges should be ready a month earlier – at the beginning of December.

The three bridges will connect Nyhavn with Christianshavn and Holmen so cyclists and pedestrians have more options when moving about in Copenhagen’s harbour and canal areas.

The project was possible thanks to a 241 million kroner donation from the AP Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller’s Fund, while the City Council's contribution was approximately 107 million kroner.
