The cheapest EU prices were found in Bulgaria, Poland and Romania

When it comes to shopping at the supermarket, Danes lead the way in the EU when it comes to paying for the products they put in their trolleys.

A comprehensive comparison of the prices of 2,400 products by the EU statistics keeper Eurostat (here in English) found that Danes have to pay 140 percent of the EU average for products.

“Denmark (140 percent of the EU28 average) had the highest price level, followed by Sweden (130 percent ), Luxembourg and Finland (both 123 percent ),” the Eurostat report found.

Thank god for Norway
Danes pay the most in four out of the six categories – food and non-alcoholic beverages, consumer electronics, personal transport equipment and restaurant and hotels – were fourth for clothing prices and seventh for tobacco and alcohol prices.

The cheapest prices were found in Bulgaria (48 percent of EU average) and Romania and Poland (both 57 percent).

However, there are still nations in Europe outside the EU that are more expensive. The Danes can rest assured knowing that the Swiss pay similar prices, while the Norwegians have to fork out more in five of the six categories, including 259 percent over the EU average when it comes to alcohol and tobacco.

A demographic projection by SDU, made for Politiken, claimed that by 2096, immigrants and their descendants could outnumber Danes of Danish origin. The report sparked a national debate, especially due to the framing of a possible “replacement.” Critics, including researchers from the Rockwool Foundation, called the calculation flawed and misleading, saying that there is a “racist logic” behind it.
