An extra 125 jobs moving to Nordhavn

The UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR) has announced that it is moving its fundraising department to the UN City in Copenhagen, bringing with it an additional 125 jobs.

The trade and development minister Mogens Jensen and Antonio Guterres, UNHCR’s head, agreed to the deal during a meeting yesterday at the ongoing UN general assembly in New York.

“UNHCR is the world’s largest aid organisation,” Jensen said in a press release. "Its fundraising department plays an essential role in collecting funds to assist the world’s 50 million refugees and I welcome the 125 employees to Copenhagen.”

Private sector contributing more
The UN City in the Nordhavn district already houses eight UN organisations and 1,250 employees and it will be the Danish state that foots the bill for the new employees.

UNHCR’s fundraising department focuses on strengthening innovative co-operation with the private sector, which is increasingly interested in supporting refugees and internally displaced people around the world.

In 2012, the private sector contributed more than 750 million kroner to helping refugees.
