Nørrebro Station set to become third biggest transport hub in the capital

New bus platforms will be built as the area is closed off to car traffic

The City Council in Copenhagen has decided the area around Nørrebro Station will in the future be reserved for bus traffic only.

The station area will be transformed into a bus-only area that will include space for buses to park, which means car traffic will be led away from the congested area – particularly away from Nørrebrogade and the Mimersgade neighbourhood area.

“Nørrebro Station is a hub when it comes to traffic,” Morten Kabell, the deputy mayor for technical and environmental issues, said in a press release.

“A number of bus-lines stop here, such as northern Europe’s busiest line 5A, and aside from that, there is space for cars, bicycles and pedestrians. It simply doesn’t work optimally, so we are doing something about it by prioritising bus traffic at Nørrebro Station.”

Future traffic hub
When the City Ring opens in a few years, Nørrebro Station is expected to become Denmark’s third-largest transport hub with up to 35,000 daily bus, train and Metro commuters.

The construction work is expected to commence sometime in 2016 as work concerning the City Ring needs to be completed.

Nørrebro has been chosen as the setting for many future projects. Last week, the pension fund Danica Pension announced that it intends to invest in the construction of a seven-block student housing complex in the district that will provide 700 student apartments at a cost of just under a billion kroner.

  • The bus platforms will be up to four metres wide and about 50 metres long, be fitted with high-tech traffic information solutions and comfortable waiting facilities and have excellent wheelchair access.
  • All the bus-lines will be stop in a single place in each direction by the platforms, which will be able to handle up to three buses parked in a row
  • The transformation will also improve conditions for cyclists as the new platforms will reduce interaction between bus passengers and cyclists. The width of the bicycle paths will also be increased
