Volkswagen Up! a car of choice in Denmark

Followed by Peugeot 208 and Skoda Octavia Combi, this two-door model was the most sought-after last year

Last year, Danes bought 188,504 new cars – more than ever before.

And leading the way this year was the Volkswagen Up! model, the country's most popular car of 2014.

Danish retailers sold 10,104 of the small city cars, significantly more than the number two on the list, Peugeot 208, which was sold 5,699 times.

The third most popular car was Skoda Octavia Combi with 5,397 cars sold.

Surprising figures
Valued for its safety, Volkswagen up! won the 2012 World Car of the Year award.

Nevertheless, Jens Brendstrup, the CEO of Autobranchen Danmark, who provided the statistics, was surprised by the figures.

"I am a little surprised that the Volkswagen Up! sold almost twice as many as the number two on the list, and that the differences between the other car models are relatively small," Brendstrup noted to TV2.
