Good TV can tempt Danes away from internet porn

But the end credits mean back to business

Danish TV gets a lot of attention these days, but nobody could have predicted this! According to analysis by the public broadcaster DR, TV events can actually attract Danish visitors away from porn sites.

DR analysed data from Pornhub, one of the biggest purveyors of internet porn, to compare the number of Danish visitors to porn sites during the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, the premiere of DR’s historical drama ‘1864’ and the 2014 Champions League final with average Saturday or Sunday evenings.

“Few people want to watch porn with their family”
In all cases there was a significant drop in visits to Pornhub during the broadcasts. At the height of Eurovision there were 17 percent fewer visits, and the same during the football, while the history buffs watching ‘1864’ accounted for 20 percent fewer porn viewers.

Vibeke Manniche, a doctor, author and commentator, offered DR her explanation for the results.

“It’s about some quite practical things,” she said.

“Few people want to watch porn with their family or football friends. ‘1864’, Eurovision and Champions League are some of the programs you see together and I imagine it’s because you’re sitting together with family and friends.”

However, it is a different story when the programs finish. By midnight on the evenings in question, the number of Danish Pornhub visitors was close to 40 percent higher than on an average day, suggesting that Danes were making up for lost time.
