A design has been chosen for a new cycle and pedestrian bridge to link Vesterbro and Amager. The bridge will take the form of a curved line arching from Vester Voldgade to Langebrogade on the other side of the harbour.
The construction of the bridge will be a gift from the property portfolio company Realdania, and the project will be carried out as a collaboration between its building subsidiary Realdania Byg and Copenhagen Municipality.
Expressive springiness
Peter Cederfeld, the head of Realdania Byg, explained the decision to choose the winning design by an international team comprising BuroHappold Engineering, architects WilkinsonEyre and Urban Agency, which has offices in Copenhagen, Dublin and Lyon.
“The judging committee has assessed that the winning proposal’s carrying quality is its ‘floating cross section’ that gives the bridge its expressive springiness,” he said.
“The proposal’s clear route over the harbour is without doubt the competition’s best answer to a bridge allowing a simple flow of traffic between the two districts. It is a bridge we think Copenhageners can be proud of.”
The new bridge will provide an alternative route for the 35,000 cyclists who currently use Langebro each weekday.
