Victory came at a steep price

Today is the military flag day commemorating the Battle of Isted Hede on 25 July 1850, the greatest battle in Danish history. Some 40,000 Danes led by General Krogh defeated 34,000 Slesvig-Holsten soldiers near Isted.

The victory, however, came at a high cost as the Danes endured over 3,000 casualties – about twice as many as the enemy.
