Unidentified vandals knocked over tombstones in the Muslim section of Korsløkke Cemetery in Odense over the weekend.
“We do not know who did it or why,” the head of security, Hans Frederiksen, told Ekstra Bladet. “There is nothing written on the tombstones that indicates a motive. We know 50 tombstones have either been turned over or completely smashed.”
Information scarce
Police on Funen would like to hear from anyone with information about the vandalism.
“The only thing we know is that it happened over the weekend,” said Frederiksen.
Authorities from Odense Municipality will be contacting the relatives.
“We have written down the name of the owners of the tombs affected,” said Thomas Østergaard Jørgensen, the head of culture and urban development in Odense.
Jørgensen rejected suggestions of video surveillance or closing the cemetery at night. “A cemetery is a public space where people go and remember their deceased,” he said.
A Muslim cemetery near Copenhagen was targeted four months ago. Police denied at the time that the event was racially motivated.
