DSB: Incoming refugees exempt from purchasing train tickets

DSB called the refugee influx “an extraordinary situation” and asked employees to show consideration

DSB ticket inspectors have been given orders to ignore refugees travelling on trains without valid tickets, reports Ekstra Bladet.

At 6am today, the DSB officials sent out a text message to DSB employees recommending them to ignore refugees travelling from the borders towards Copenhagen without a valid train ticket.

Do not fine refugees
The text message was followed by an email with a direct call to all ticket inspectors instructing them not to fine refugees travelling through the country.

“I can see the humanity in it and we must, of course, help refugees. But it can be rather problematic for us if we have to issue a fine to ‘Anders Hansen’ while we let a group of refugees travel for free,” a DSB employee, who wished to remain anonymous, told Ekstra Bladet.

According to the ticket inspector, assessing whether a passenger is a refugee or not may also be difficult.

Most buy tickets anyways
“This is an extraordinary situation,” Anette Haugaard, the deputy head at DSB, told Ekstra Bladet.

“The police have informed us that we can expect many refugees taking trains from Lolland to Copenhagen, and that’s why we have asked our staff to show some consideration.”

According to Haugaard, so far most passengers have purchased a valid ticket.
