Number of asylum-seekers coming to Denmark lower than last year

Authorities report only 1,500 people of the estimated 13,000 who have entered Denmark in the past few weeks have applied for asylum

As of the end of August, the number of asylum-seekers coming to Denmark was lower than last year, according to the Immigration Service, but recent arrivals have seen the overall figures catch up on 2014.

Fewer than 7,000 people sought asylum in Denmark from January to August, which is 900 less than in the same period last year.

A total of 1,785 refugees applied for asylum in August, but in 2014 it was 2,302 – a record month during that year.

The numbers have risen sharply since the refugees and economic migrants started arriving earlier this month.

According to the authorities, around 13,000 have entered Denmark in the past few weeks, although only about 1,500 have applied for asylum – which equates to roughly 100 a day during September.

If the trend continues, the total number of registered asylum-seekers for 2015 will have caught up with last year by the end of the month.
