Lobster fisherman hauls in four-metre long basking shark

A huge four-metre long shark was caught in Kattegat Strait off the coast of Denmark by a lobster fisherman yesterday.

But fret not, winter swimmers, Denmark isn’t about to be turned into another Amity, NY. The shark, which weighed in at an impressive 500 kilos, was in fact a harmless basking shark.

Despite being the second largest shark in the world – growing upwards of 12 metres – the basking shark feeds solely on plankton.

Rare guests
These days, basking sharks are rare in Danish waters, but they were more common until the 1970’s.

The shark caught yesterday is scheduled to be preserved and become part of the Natural History Museum of Denmark’s scientific collection in Copenhagen.
