Today’s Date: Bloodiest ever battle

Goodbye Skåne, Halland and Blekinge

On this day in 1676, Denmark lost the bloodiest battle recorded in Nordic history at Lund, Sweden.

King Karl XI narrowly beat King Christian V’s armies, although the losses on both sides amounted to close to 50 percent.

This became a turning point in Scandinavian history as the territories Skåne, Halland and Blekinge, previously under Danish rule, became Swedish.
