Christian VII hiding his mental illnesses behind a fur coat

Christian VII was born on this day in 1749.

With insanity (his mother, the daughter of George II of Britain, was the sister of Mad King George III) and inbreeding (his wife was the granddaughter of George II of Britain) rampant in the family, he didn’t have a chance.

And then he went and appointed Johann Struensee as his physician.

Thanks to the good doctor, his reign is remembered for many progressive reforms. Christian, could barely remember his own name.
