On this day in 1014, Sweyn Forkbeard fell off his horse and died. It ended a reign that included him stealing the Danish throne off his father Harald Bluetooth aged 25 and beating England into submission to take its crown aged 53. Like William the Conqueror 53 years later, he was crowned on Christmas Day. Some 40 days later he was dead.
