Starting today, the Danish police are launching a week-long nationwide campaign targeted at cyclists and scooter riders, reports DR.

Throughout the winter holiday, police officers across the country will crack down on cyclists and scooter riders breaking traffic rules.

From dawn to dusk, the police will check if bicycles have the required lights, reflectors and functional brakes and if scooter drivers are using helmets and respecting speed limits.

Benefits of wearing a helmet
Penalties for breaking the traffic rules range from 700 to 1,000 kroner.

Jesper Pedersen, the head of the traffic department at Funen Police, said cyclists without helmets won’t be fined, but the police may stop them anyway to explain the benefits of wearing a safety helmet.

In 2014, some 30 cyclists and 13 moped drivers were killed in traffic accidents.
