Today’s Date: Birth of a sailing legend

Valdemar Bandolowski, a double Olympic gold medallist in sailing, was born on this day in 1946.

He first topped the podium in the soling soling class at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics and then defended his title in Moscow.

The class was discontinued as an Olympic event in 2000, but Bandolowski continued plotting courses – perhaps appropriately – in the travel business.
