Today’s Date: Denmark’s Child Bride

Anne of Denmark wasn’t around to see her son, Charles of England, executed by the Roundheads in 1649 – she had, on this day, died 30 years earlier after giving James I three heirs.

The second daughter of King Frederick II was a child bride, aged just 14, when she set sail for Scotland in 1589 to marry the then James VI of Scotland, and the wedding nearly didn’t happen.

A forced detour to Norway saw her journey by foot to Oslo, delaying her by months.
