Amagerbrogade closing in on radical transformation

Central road to get bicycle and pedestrian-friendly facelift

The transformation of Amagerbrogade from a traffic-laden road into a vibrant vein pulsating with city life has taken its first step.

City Hall aims to make a number of changes to the key road in the Amager district of Copenhagen by expanding its pavements and bicycle paths and also providing more bicycle parking options and space for cafes and shopping.

“Part of the space required to make the changes will be incorporated from the car traffic,” wrote Copenhagen Municipality.

“The desire is to cut unnecessary car traffic. Drivers will experience having to stop behind stopped buses in areas where they can drive around them today. Calculations suggest a 10-30 percent drop in car traffic can be expected.”

The renovation of Amagerbrogade will also include the establishment of several expanded bus stop areas to improve safety for those getting on and off  buses.

In total, 108.4 million kroner has been set aside for the project. The work is scheduled to begin in April 2017 and finish in December 2018.
