Denmark’s wait for first medal at 2016 Olympics is a short one

Still, it was a long haul to get it

Denmark’s Jakob Fuglsang has today won Denmark’s first medal of the 2016 Olympics – a silver in the men’s road race.

Leaving Tour de France winner Chris Froome and the cream of road cycling in their wake, a breakaway by Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali, Colombia‘s Sergio Henao and Poland’s Rafal Majka looked to have divided the medals before Nibali and Henao dramatically crashed out.

The eventual winner, Belgium’s Greg van Avermaet, and Fuglsang then caught the Pole to ensure a thrilling finish at the end of the 237.5km route.

The silver leaves Denmark fifth equal in the current medal table on Day One.
