Rio 2016 rundown: Today’s Olympic action (Day 5)

Cycling time trials, swimming and football among the events on the menu

It was an exciting day in Rio last night as Michael Phelps won gold medals number 20 and 21, while Serena Williams was surprisingly ousted in the women’s tennis.

However, it was a fine day for Denmark’s rowers, who all progressed in their respective events, and the Danish men’s handball team kept up their winning ways against Tunisia.

Today will be critical to Denmark’s aspirations of reaching double-digit medals in Rio. The rowers and swimmers will all be aiming to reach their finals today, while the men’s football team hopes to overcome the seemingly impossible against superstar Neymar and Brazil.

With 20 gold medals up for grabs, here are the pick of the litter:

13:30 – Cycling: The cyclists are back in the saddle with the women’s time trial, while the men’s time trial starts at 15:00

16:00 – Rugby sevens: Japan created a massive upset against New Zealand yesterday and there are more tasty group stage matchups today as Australia face South Africa at 16:30 and Britain take on New Zealand at 17:30.

03:03-04:55 – Swimming: There are four finals today in the pool (Men’s 200m breaststroke and 100m freestyle and women’s 200m butterfly and 4x200m freestyle relay) as well as a host of semi-final races.

21:00 – Gymnastics: The men’s individual all-around will be taking over the mat with Ukraine, Russia, Japan and China likely battling out for the medals.

In the women’s lightweight double sculls, Anne Lolk and Juliane Rasmussen will also attempt to reach the final on TV2

In the men’s lightweight double sculls, the defending Olympic gold medalists from London, Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist are up against it in their semi-final race on TV2

15:00: Cycling

Christopher Juul-Jensen hopes to emulate his medal-winning teammate Jakob Fuglsang in the men’s time trial on DR3

15:00: Equestrian

The Danish horse whisperers (Agnete Thinggaard, Anders Dal, Anna Kasprzak and Cathrine Dufour) are out to trot today for the first day of the team dressage grand prix on TV2

18:00: Swimming

Both Jeanette Ottesen and Pernille Blume be in the pool for the heats in the women’s 100-metre freestyle. They’ll likely be at it again in the semis at 03:07 on DR1.

18.05: Sailing

Medal contender Jonas Høgh in the men’s finn will be out for his third run. He is sitting sixth overall – on TV2 Charlie

In the men’s laser, Michael Hansen will compete in his sixth race, while Allan Nørregaard and Anette Viborg with contend first three races in the nacra 17

18.15: Sailing

Anne-Marie Rindom was disqualified yesterday in the women’s laser radial for being too close to another boat at the start, but is still fourth overall. She goes for her sixth race on TV2 Charlie

18:45: Swimming

There are high hopes for world record holder Rikke Møller Pedersen, when she hits the water for the heats in her favourite discipline, the women’s 200m breaststroke. The semis will be at 04:05 on DR1

03:00: Football

Denmark face a momentous task when it takes on the hosts Brazil. Denmark will likely need a draw against Brazil to progress to the knockout stage, unless Iraq and South Africa draw in the other group matchup – on DR1
