It’s official: Wolves sensationally land Van der Vaart

Dutch legend the biggest foreign player to play in the Superliga

In what is the most high-profile signing in Danish football for nearly two decades, FC Midtjylland has signed Dutch star Rafael van der Vaart today.

Van der Vaart, now 33, joins after an unsuccessful spell with Spanish outfit Real Betis and has expressed a desire to ply his trade closer to his son, who lives in Hamburg, and his girlfriend Estavana Polman, who plays professional handball for Esbjerg.

“I’m really happy it was a long week. Today is a great day for me and the club. It is a great team and I think we can have a great season. I look forward to showing that I am still a good player,” the Dutchman said during the press conference.

Storied career
Not since Brian Laudrup joined FC Copenhagen in 1998 has a bigger profile joined a Danish team, and the Dutchman is no doubt the biggest foreign player ever to play in the Superliga.

The Dutchman, who has turned out for clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam, Hamburg, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur over the course of his career, won 109 caps for the Netherlands and played in the 2010 World Cup final.
