There is strong evidence that the US social media colossus Facebook is keen on setting up shop in Denmark by erecting a massive 184,000 sqm data centre near Odense.
According to Fyens Stiftstidende newspaper, Facebook wants to build three large server halls and a number of other buildings in the business area of Tietgenbyen, located just south of Odense.
Facebook, meanwhile, has not yet revealed any of its hands, although it has conceded it is interested in the Odense site.
“We haven’t made any final decision to come to Denmark yet,,” Peter Münster, the head of communications for Facebook in the Nordics, told DR Nyheder.
“It takes years to prep an area for a new data centre, and due to the long prelude, we always evaluate new potential locations when expanding our global infrastructure. By thinking ahead, we can react swiftly when we require increased capacity. But we haven’t bound ourselves to anything.”

Holy COWI
Fyens Stiftstidende has obtained an official VVM (evaluation of environmental effects) report on the data centre produced by the consultancy group COWI, and the newspaper contends the investment would cost billions of kroner.
Should Facebook decide to go through with its Odense plans, it would be just the third data centre the social media company has built outside the US.
It’s not the first time a global company has indicated it might open up a data centre in Denmark. In 2015, tech giant Apple announced it would open a data centre in Viborg.
