Danish man sets fire to his own apartment

Police forced to rescue neighbours

A 38-year-old man set fire to his own Silkeborg apartment on Wednesday afternoon, according to Mid and West Jutland Police.

“We do not know the precise motive, but the detainee is known to the psychiatric authorities,” Jens Ole Pedersen, a deputy police inspector and station manager at the Silkeborg police department, told BT.

No motive given
When the police arrived, the 38-year-old man was standing on the street in front of the apartment complex. The man told police that he had set fire to the apartment on the third floor. The police arrested the man and called the fire brigade.

An elderly woman who lived next to the suspect suffered smoke inhalation, but was treated and released by an ambulance staff at the location. Police also had to kick down doors to several apartments in the stairwell so they could ensure  there was nobody around.

The man had started the fire in his own apartment by igniting a bonfire consisting of blankets, clothes and other items. The fire went out on its own, but several apartments in the complex suffered soot and smoke damage.
