Revealed: Danish tourists’ favourite domestic holiday destinations

Copenhagen tops the list of Danes’ preferred vacation spots at home

According to Dansk Erhverv, Copenhagen tops the list of most popular destinations for Danish tourists in Denmark.

Bornholm is second, while Jammerbugt municipality in northern Jutland is third.

The rest of the top ten in descending order is Frederikshavn in fourth, followed by Varde in fifth, then Hjørring, Syddjurs, Norddjurs, Ringkøbing-Skjern and lastly Tønder in tenth.

Broad section of Denmark
“The top ten reflects how important tourism is for many of Denmark’s municipalities,” said Kirstine Tolstrup Nielsen, head consultant at Dansk Erhverv.

She emphasized that a broad section of Denmark is represented in the top ten.

“Just outside the list we also have Svendborg and Lolland, while tourism on Fyn, Zealand and the islands also takes up quite a bit combined.”

The summer ahead
Last year, the Corona pandemic resulted in an unusual summer, with restrictions putting a standstill to most international travel. Many Danes opted to stay in Denmark during the summer – a trend that is expected to continue this year.

“We expect that Danish people will once again prioritize vacation in Denmark, even though there are better possibilities to travel outside the borders this year. Bookings of holiday homes made by Danes are definitely looking strong for the coming months,” said Nielsen.

Before the pandemic, the number of overnight stays across the country booked by Danish tourists was 9.4 million in the summer of 2019. Last summer, the number rose to 12.9 million.
