Miracle on ice! Denmark beats Canada for first time ever

Danes now just need a draw against Slovakia to make it to the quarterfinals of the IIHF World Championship in Helsinki

The first time Denmark played Canada in ice hockey back in 1949 it didn’t go so well.

Canada won 47-0 with all their players recording at least a hat-trick. 

Some 73 years later and Denmark still hadn’t beaten the Canadians. 

Until tonight.

Thanks to some stout defending and cynical finishing up front, the Danes raced to a 2-0 lead before holding on for a historic 3-2 triumph at the IIHF World Championships in Helsinki.

Markus Lauridsen and Peter Regin put the Danes up 2-0 in the first period before Canada pulled one back. 

Mathias Bau Hansen restored the two-goal cushion in the third period and the Canadians could only muster a late goal to draw within one. 

Following the sound of the horn to end the game, the Danish players and fans alike celebrated the historic result.

The win means that Denmark now only needs to draw Slovakia in their final game to reach the quarterfinals.
