Greenland’s Premier, Múte Bourup Egede, has unexpectedly postponed a planned visit to Denmark’s King Frederik, originally scheduled for Wednesday. The visit was set to be an important diplomatic moment, with Egede meeting the Danish monarch at Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg in Copenhagen. However, Egede cited “calendar gymnastics” as the reason for the delay, a comment he made to the Danish news agency Ritzau.
This is happening while Donald Trump Jr. is heading to Greenland for a private visit as his father, President-elect Donald Trump, maintains his interest in the Danish territory. Trump Jr. will spend the day filming content for his podcast.
Mininnguaq Kleist, the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, told Reuters that Donald Trump Jr.´s visit was not announced to the authorities, so his visit is private and not official. “We have not been informed about his program, and therefore this is a private visit,” Kleist stated to the news agency.
Yet, canceling or postponing a visit to Denmark to meet the king is not a normal occurrence. It can at least be perceived as a diplomatic insult, if not a clear signal of Egede’s foreign policy preferences. The question is: will he meet Trump Jr. during the latter’s visit to Greenland? If the answer is yes, it will be clear that he canceled the meeting with the king to meet the president’s son, casting doubt on Greenland’s diplomatic intentions.
This happens after Egede in the New Year´s Eve speech said “The time has come for us to take the next step and shape our future, including deciding who we collaborate and trade with. Our cooperation and trade cannot remain solely through Denmark”.
