CopenHill nets prestigious architecture award

A power plant, a ski slope, a climbing wall: the Building of the Year 2021 is a 3-in-1, and it’s Danish

A bit of a golden nugget for Danish architecture was unveiled in Lisbon during the closing ceremony of the prestigious World Architecture Festival on December 3.

Copenhagen landmark CopenHill was awarded the ‘Building of the Year 2021’ within the category Production, Energy and Recycling.

CopenHill, also knows as Amager Bakke, was chosen from over 200 buildings in the running.

Visionary building
WAF program director Paul Finch praised the way CopenHill “addresses the role of architecture in the new world of recycling and zero carbon” and “encourages designers to think beyond the brief, champion ideas and overcome political and economic barriers in pursuit of the social good”.

Density, surface use and the nature of the materials were important factors in the nomination for the WAF award.

The cladding is made of glass and recycled aluminium. The internal volumes of the plant have been designed for the precise positioning of the machines.
