Howling in Herning! Landmark win for the Wolves in Europe

FC Midtjylland’s mauling of Lazio last night is probably the best result for Danish football in Europe in years

Danish football teams looked destined to struggle in Europe this year.

Tough groups across the board and a UEFA coefficient standing that is almost certain to fall, Denmark needs not one, but several miracles on the pitch, if they are to turn the tide.

Well, they got one now.

FC Midtjylland provided arguably the best result for Danish football in quite some time by trampling Italian giants Lazio 5-1 in Herning last night in the Europa League.

Pundits are already ranking the result up there among the greatest European nights for Danish teams over the years – though no-one will likely ever come close to eclipsing OB Odense’s legendary 2–0 away at Real Madrid back in 1994.

More miracles, please
Another team to provide some much-needed points to Denmark’s coefficient war chest this week was FC Copenhagen, which held Sevilla to a goalless draw at Parken on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

The final Danish team in Europe this season, Silkeborg, were ahead at home versus West Ham, but ended up losing 2-3 and have yet to pick up a point in their Conference League group.

Points will be difficult to come by once again next round. FCK travel to Manchester City, FCM host Feyenoord and Silkeborg are at home to Steaua Bucharest on October 5-6.

Silkeborg have a decent chance to get points, but the other two might need another one of those miracles.
