As part of its worldwide castle tour, TNT Theatre is bringing the popular Shakespeare play The Merchant of Venice to the courtyard of Rosenborg Castle.
In association with ADG Europe, it has a global reputation for performing the works of Shakespeare as they would have been seen in Elizabethan times: outside with music played on baroque instruments and choreography.
Although TNT concedes the play is “disturbingly modern in the questions it raises about race, money and gender”, the director Paul Stebbings has opted for a historical setting that “allows us to believe in the cruelty of the law, but also avoiding simple parallels with the [anti-Seminism in Germany in the] 1930s”.
It will also distance the play from the likes of Kiss me Kate and 1999 Hollywood film Ten Things I Hate About You.
The troupe calls upon the audience to use their imagination – something that will be helped by the historical setting provided by the castle.
Through their simplistic approach the themes of love, death, honour and pride are clearly highlighted.
Suddeutsche Zeitung called this performance “world class theatre” whilst the UK’s Classical Music Magazine noted that it was “true music theatre”.
To see a Shakespeare play performed outdoors is something everyone must experience.
