Danish scientist shot and killed in Tanzania

Vagn Alstrup was a leading lichenologist

According to Ekstra Bladet tabloid, the noted Danish scientist and lichenologist Vagn Alstrup has been shot and killed during a robbery in Tanzania.

The foreign minister has confirmed that a Dane has been killed in Tanzania, but would not reveal any further information. The crime took place last week, and it is still unclear whether the authorities in Tanzania have made any arrests.

Second home
The Dane lived in Tanzania and considered the east African nation his second home.

Alstrup, who was 71 at the time of his death, worked for the University of Copenhagen. He has published a number of book on the subject of lichenology, the study of fungi.

Alstrup’s wife was also shot during the incident, but is expected to survive.
