Prison guard going to jail over assault on inmate

42-year-old found guilty of repeatedly punching prisoner in the face

A prison guard was sentenced today by Copenhagen City Court to 60 days in prison for assaulting an inmate on April 24 in Vestre prison, Ekstra Bladet reports.

The 42-year-old guard was convicted of striking the inmate several times in the face with a clenched fist, including as the inmate lay down in his cell.

Inmates are exposed
“We argued that it is an aggravating factor when a prison guard commits violence against an inmate he is employed to look after," Maria Fanø-Fredeløkke, a head of section at the Ministry of Justice, said on behalf of the prosecution.

"An inmate finds himself in a particularly exposed position.”
